Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has announced the launch of the King Salman Gate project near the Grand Mosque in Makkah. The large-scale development aims to provide modern infrastructure and facilities around Islam’s holiest site.
The project will cover an area of about 12 million square meters and include residential, commercial, cultural, and hospitality spaces. It will also feature indoor and outdoor prayer areas with the capacity to accommodate around 900,000 worshippers.
Part of Saudi Vision 2030
The King Salman Gate project is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, which focuses on modernizing Makkah and supporting economic diversification. The project is expected to be completed by 2036 and will create over 300,000 jobs. For the first time, foreign Muslims will also be able to directly purchase residential properties in Makkah.
Preservation and Heritage
During the construction phase, around 19,000 square meters of historical sites will be restored to preserve Makkah’s cultural and religious identity. The design will combine modern urban planning with traditional architecture to reflect the city’s rich heritage.
Global Connectivity and Development
The King Salman Gate project will link directly to the Grand Mosque through an integrated public transportation network, making access easier for visitors throughout the year. The development is a key step toward transforming Makkah into a global destination for both religious and cultural tourism.
Once completed, the project will not only serve millions of pilgrims visiting for Hajj and Umrah but also attract visitors from around the world, offering them an advanced and comfortable environment to explore the spiritual and cultural essence of Makkah.
