Los Angeles —
Reality TV icon and fashion mogul Kim Kardashian has finally opened up about the inspiration behind her face mask look that stole the spotlight at the Academy Museum Gala this weekend.
Speaking to Variety, the SKIMS founder revealed that her bold outfit was a creation from Margiela Couture by Designer Glenn Martens.
“I love Margiela,” Kim said. “I flew in my favorite makeup artist Mario from New York, and this was kind of a last-minute thing — I’m sure he wasn’t too thrilled about that.”
Kim shared that she was in full hair and makeup under the mask and had planned to remove it once inside the gala.
“It felt very Skims-y,” she added. “When I saw this look at the Margiela couture show, I immediately thought, ‘That is so Skims to me.’”
During the same conversation, Kim also discussed her recently launched limited-edition $32 merkins, a tongue-in-cheek fashion product that sold out within minutes.
“It was just a fun idea,” she said. “There was a shoot where someone wanted to have hair down there, and I thought, ‘Why not just make it easy and put it on a thong?’ I didn’t expect it to blow up like that.”
This isn’t the first time Kim has made headlines with a dramatic full-body outfit — she previously turned heads at the 2021 Met Gala with her all-black Balenciaga ensemble, which became one of the most talked-about looks of the year.
