Pakistan’s promising fast bowler, Kashif Ali, is optimistic that his robust performances in first-class cricket and his maiden stint with English county Kent in the ongoing County Championship will help him solidify a permanent place in Pakistan’s Test team.
From making his Test debut in a home series against the West Indies to experiencing county cricket in England for the first time, the 30-year-old describes this period as the most “blessed” phase of his life, both on and off the field.
He shared his thoughts exclusively with Geo News at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, following a match between Kent CCC and the host Middlesex CCC.
“Alhamdulillah, it’s been a special year,” Kashif remarked. “I debuted in Test cricket, and shortly after, I got the opportunity to play for Kent. Adapting to new conditions—the weather, the pitches, the overall environment—is not easy, but I’m genuinely pleased with how things have progressed so far.”
Kashif, who has consistently delivered strong performances in Pakistan’s domestic circuit, views county cricket as a significant career advancement. In the five championship matches he has played to date, he has secured 11 wickets.
“The facilities, structure, and support systems here are truly on another level. Cricket itself is consistent everywhere—but the professional environment here genuinely enables you to perform at your peak,” he commented.
Playing under the guidance of coach Adam Hollioake—who previously worked with Pakistan’s national team—has made Kashif’s transition into county cricket remarkably smooth. “He’s very friendly and encouraging. We developed a good rapport within just a couple of sessions,” he stated.
For any cricketer, playing at Lord’s is a career-defining moment, and Kashif was no exception. “As a young boy in Rawalpindi, I used to hear about Lord’s and often wondered what it would be like. Playing here was truly surreal. It genuinely feels like the home of cricket—from the passionate crowd to the vibrant atmosphere, and even the amazing food during the breaks,” he chuckled.
Earlier this year, Kashif received his first call-up to the national squad, making his Test debut in Multan as the sole fast bowler in Pakistan’s Test XI against the West Indies. “Representing Pakistan in Test cricket was an immense honor—a moment of immense pride for me, my wife, my parents, and my entire family. It’s a feeling I find incredibly difficult to put into words.”
However, it wasn’t just his cricketing milestones that made 2024 unforgettable. Kashif also embraced fatherhood. “My daughter was born just before my Test debut—and since then, things have taken a beautiful turn. She has been a constant source of strength and motivation for me. I genuinely believe she brought me good luck,” he shared with affection.
Kashif’s cricketing journey commenced in 2010, inspired by the legendary pacer Shoaib Akhtar, who also hails from Rawalpindi. “Watching Shoaib Bhai made me fall in love with fast bowling. His energy, aggression, and sheer passion left a profound impression on me.”
Looking ahead, Kashif remains dedicated to maintaining his current form and securing a regular spot in Pakistan’s national team. “InshaAllah, my primary goal is to continue performing consistently and remain in contention for selection. That’s how you retain your place—through sheer consistency.”
With the unwavering support of his family, coaches, and mentors—and a promising county season currently underway—Kashif Ali is not only making a significant impact in first-class cricket but also meticulously laying the groundwork for a long and impactful international career.
