KARACHI: The persistent traffic crisis and alleged administrative negligence in Karachi claimed the life of another young victim when a 17-year-old school student was tragically crushed by a speeding water tanker in Surjani Town. The incident highlights the acute danger posed by heavy traffic in the metropolitan area.
The victim, identified as Abid, an 11th-grade student at Usman Public High School, was on his way to school on his motorcycle near 4K Chowrangi when the fatal collision occurred with the uncontrollable tanker.
Immediately following the crash, the tanker driver fled the scene. Enraged by the recurring negligence and the loss of a young life, local residents responded with fierce protest, setting the abandoned water tanker on fire. Firefighting units managed to extinguish the blaze while police launched an investigation and began the search for the escaped driver.
Adding gravity to the tragedy, a local Rescue organization released sobering statistics for the current year, revealing that 806 individuals have lost their lives in traffic accidents in Karachi so far, with 11,596 injuries recorded. The data critically points to a systemic failure in safety management, noting that heavy traffic alone has been responsible for 244 fatalities, underscoring that accidents continue unchecked despite official strategies.
