Even with Eid ul Adha still over a month away, preparations are already in full swing as Karachi’s main cattle market, situated at the Northern Bypass, has been inaugurated. The opening ceremony on Saturday was led by Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Wahab hailed the Northern Bypass cattle market as the largest in Asia and assured attendees that security and other concerns at the market would be addressed.
Highlighting the cattle market’s significance as a key social event in Karachi, Wahab stated that this year, the establishment of cattle markets will be restricted to designated areas across the metropolis, and the administration will levy taxes on those set up at these official points.
Meanwhile, the administration has projected that over 300,000 animals are expected to be traded at the North Bypass cattle market this year.
The inauguration of the cattle market signifies a crucial step in the preparations and anticipation leading up to Eid ul Adha, an event of significant social and financial importance in the city. Visiting the cattle market is deeply ingrained in Karachi’s culture, with youth and families alike frequenting it, transforming it into a festive gathering.
Last year, the Karachi administration had designated 22 sacrificial animal markets. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was responsible for managing eight major cattle markets, while 12 markets fell under the jurisdiction of various town municipal corporations (TMCs), and two temporary animal markets were permitted in cantonment board areas.
