Karachi continues to grapple with a deadly traffic environment, with at least 536 people killed in accidents so far in 2025, according to police reports on Sunday. Of these, 60 deaths were in accidents involving trucks.
The city has seen numerous traffic accidents this year, often leading to fatalities. These tragedies have frequently sparked anger among residents, leading mobs to set fire to the vehicles involved.
A similar incident occurred today on Rashid Minhas Road, where two siblings were tragically killed. In response, an enraged crowd set seven dumpers ablaze. The victims were identified as Mahnoor, 22, and her 14-year-old brother, Ahmed Raza.
Elaborating on the accident statistics, police stated that 25 people died in accidents involving buses this year, 11 in minibuses, six in coaches, and 48 in crashes with trailers.
Additionally, 20 people were killed in dumper accidents, 44 in water tankers, and six in oil tankers’ crashes. The police also noted that 15 people died in van collisions, five in jeeps, and 58 in car crashes. Among all the deaths, 51 were women.
The alarming frequency of high-speed dumper truck accidents, which have caused numerous fatalities and injuries recently, has prompted authorities to announce various safety measures. This ongoing crisis has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of existing traffic laws and significant improvements to the city’s road infrastructure to prevent further tragedies.
