A serious crisis has unfolded at the University of Karachi, with the institution’s valuable land being occupied and a petrol pump being constructed on it in blatant disregard for the law. The absence of effective action by provincial authorities has heightened concerns among the university’s administration and faculty.
According to a letter sent by the university’s registrar, Dr. Imran, to the Secretary of Boards and Universities, Mr. Abbas Baloch, the issue of land grabbing on the university’s premises was first reported on September 25, 2025. However, despite the administration’s repeated requests for action, no official response was received, and no tangible progress was made. The letter emphasized that the unauthorized occupation and illegal construction not only interfere with the university’s administrative affairs but also pose a direct threat to the institution’s security, autonomy, and academic environment.
The university administration has urged the provincial government to provide immediate administrative and legal assistance to address the situation and ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable. The university’s syndicate member and former president of the Teachers’ Association, Dr. Mohsin, has also called upon the government to take action, warning that if the university’s land is not protected, it could set a dangerous precedent for other educational institutions in the province.
