Karachi: In a move aimed at benefiting citizens, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced on Sunday that no parking fees will be charged at sites under the administrative control of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
Wahab explained that the decision, which is in the public interest, comes after the financial stability of the KMC. With over Rs2 billion in its bank account, the corporation no longer needs to collect the usual Rs40-50 million in parking fees.
He further elaborated that the KMC had achieved a remarkable financial milestone, earning a record-breaking Rs2.3 billion in just seven months, which represented a 300% increase in its earnings. Additionally, 751 development projects are currently in progress.
In today’s statement, Wahab announced that a notification would be issued to officially end parking fees at 46 parking sites on 106 main roads in Karachi. However, parking fees will still be charged in six cantonment boards and 25 towns within the city. He also emphasized that those charging parking fees under the KMC’s name illegally would face arrest.
This decision follows the Sindh government’s new directives that restrict the entry of dumpers into Karachi after a rise in fatal accidents caused by heavy vehicles. According to these new rules, dumpers will only be allowed into the city between 11 PM and 6 AM.
