Major crackdown on smuggled goods in Tariq Road leads to clashes between traders and law enforcement
Customs officials in Karachi launched a significant raid on shops in the bustling commercial hub of Tariq Road, successfully confiscating a large quantity of illegally smuggled cloth and other prohibited items. The operation signals a robust effort by the authorities to tackle the pervasive issue of smuggling that plagues the local economy.
However, the raid met with fierce resistance from local shopkeepers and traders. As the Customs team began loading the seized goods onto a mini-truck, enraged demonstrators launched a violent protest. The situation escalated rapidly, culminating in the protesters setting fire to the mini-truck being used by the Customs officials.
In response to the escalating violence, a heavy contingent of police was deployed. To disperse the aggressive crowd, police resorted to baton-charging the protesters and firing shots into the air. Following these measures, the demonstrators were finally dispersed, allowing the Customs officials to conclude their operation.
Tariq Road’s shopping areas are known as a major center for the distribution and sale of smuggled merchandise. Customs authorities have conducted several high-profile operations in this area previously, seizing illegal textiles worth millions of rupees. Officials emphasize that such actions are crucial for protecting local industries from the damaging effects of smuggling and safeguarding the national economy.
