Sri Lankan cricketer Kamindu Mendis has been named the ICC Emerging Player of the Year 2024, a recognition that highlights his exceptional performances across various formats.
The 26-year-old left-handed batter scored 1,451 runs, averaging over 50, firmly positioning himself among the rising stars of the sport.
In Test cricket, Mendis delivered a standout performance, amassing 1,049 runs from nine matches at an incredible average of 74.92.
His contributions included five centuries and three half-centuries, many achieved at crucial moments for Sri Lanka. These decisive performances solidified his role as a cornerstone of the national Test team.
Starting the year with just one Test appearance, Mendis emerged as a key player across all formats. He contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s push for their maiden ICC World Test Championship Final spot and was among six batters to surpass 1,000 Test runs in the calendar year.
Notably, he achieved the highest average among this group.
During the series in England, Mendis ended as Sri Lanka’s top run-scorer in the three-Test series. His efforts were pivotal in securing Sri Lanka’s first Test victory on English soil in a decade.
Mendis’ career-best performance came in the second Test against New Zealand in Galle, where he scored an unbeaten 182 in the first innings, featuring 16 boundaries and 4 sixes from 250 balls.
This knock anchored Sri Lanka’s imposing total of 602/5, leading to a 2-0 series sweep and earning him the Player of the Match award.
His consistent performances placed him in elite company, as he became the joint-third fastest player to score 1,000 Test runs, equaling Sir Don Bradman’s record of achieving the milestone in 13 innings.
“Winning two ICC Player of the Month Awards in 2024, along with being named the ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year, fills me with immense joy and pride,” Mendis said. “These accolades are a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my game, with the unwavering support of my coaches, teammates, family, and friends.”
Reflecting on his journey, he remarked, “Playing international cricket has always been a childhood dream. Having the chance to showcase my skills on such a platform is both an honour and a result of relentless effort.”
Mendis also acknowledged the immense talent of his fellow nominees, stating, “I would also like to recognize the incredible talents of Gus, Shamar, and Saim — all of whom are exceptional players.”
