Junaid Akbar, a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the party’s president for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has resigned from his position as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Akbar stated that he submitted his resignation to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, emphasizing that the role was a trust bestowed by the party and he was resigning in accordance with its directives. He affirmed his acceptance of any decision made by PTI founder Imran Khan.
Meanwhile, Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, revealed in an interview with Geo News that her sisters had recently met with the PTI founder.
She indicated that they received a message concerning Akbar’s resignation, which was relayed to PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and senior leader Omar Ayub.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, Barrister Gohar confirmed that he was informed by the PTI founder’s sister the previous night about the directive regarding Akbar.
He characterized the situation as an internal party matter, adding that any directive from the party founder is followed. He expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved promptly as per those instructions.
Background discussions within the party confirmed that Imran Khan had instructed Akbar to resign from his PAC position and focus solely on party affairs, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Insiders suggested that Akbar’s dual role was perceived as a hindrance, and the party founder preferred him to concentrate more on organizational responsibilities.
Akbar was elected unopposed as PAC chairman in January and was simultaneously appointed provincial party president, replacing Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Speculation is circulating that Omar Ayub may be named the next PAC chairman.
