AMMAN: Jordan’s leading Islamist opposition party, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), has achieved a historic victory by winning 31 out of 138 seats in the kingdom’s parliament, according to official results released on Wednesday. This marks a significant increase from their previous representation, where they held 10 seats in the 2020 parliament and 16 seats in the 2016 legislature.
The IAF, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, secured the highest number of seats among parties and factions in the recent election, although they fell short of a majority. This result is their largest representation since 1989, when they won 22 out of 80 seats in the then-parliament.
The Islamist party’s gains are attributed to growing public discontent over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, particularly among Jordanians of Palestinian origin, who make up half of the population. IAF Secretary General Wael al Saqqa expressed satisfaction with the results and the trust placed in the party by the Jordanian people.
