Jessie J is reflecting on how motherhood has brought light into her life.
Her new song and first independent single, “No Secrets,” reflects her dark journey since her pregnancy loss in 2021 and how she adapted to it.
“Honestly, the amount of love is so overwhelming,” Jessie told People Magazine about fans’ reactions to “No Secrets” since the song’s release on April 25th. “There’s always that little voice that’s just like, ‘Do people care? Do people want it?’ And there’s just been so much joy and excitement.”
“No Secrets” opens with a vulnerable admission, “I lost my baby / But the show must go on, right?” which the pop star said was her way to have a “face-to-face, eye contact conversation” with listeners.
“That obviously relates to me and what I’ve been through,” says Jessie of the opening lyric. “But as adults in this crazy world, we are all going through heartbreak, loss, grief, trauma — and all have to get up and go and do something, look after someone, be present or go to work to pay our bills. All of us have to put that sadness somewhere, store it and continue,” the English singer, 37, went on.
Jessie added that she felt compelled to be “honest” with fans on “No Secrets” after years of not sharing new music, as the new single marks her first major release in about four years.
“It’s the kind of song where if it didn’t come first, it shouldn’t have come at all,” she says.
Jessie then welcomed her first son, Sky, with boyfriend Chanan Safir Colman two years after her miscarriage.
“I adore this boy and this man so much, I could tear up,” she said of Colman, who she got romantically linked to in 2021, and their child, further calling it a “happy ending” to the challenging time.
“It breaks my heart that not everyone’s going to get their happy ending. The gratefulness and the joy that I experience every day, waking up knowing he’s in my house, and he’s alive and well… Until you experience it, it’s so hard to really understand. And I never really understood that until I had him,” she added.
Jessie’s current mindset is reflected in her next single, “Living My Best Life,” which comes out Friday, May 16th.
“When I gave birth to my son, that was the song I was playing,” she said of the song written five years ago. “I’m going through some health stuff, and this is the song that makes me feel powerful.”
She added that the song “Living My Best Life” has already taken her through “so many journeys in my life”—and now she’s ready to share it with others.
