Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent successful visit to the United States has bolstered his political position, according to a report by the international media. US President Donald Trump praised Netanyahu openly and described Israel’s performance in the Gaza cease-fire agreement as “100 percent.”
However, US officials claim that Netanyahu is deliberately delaying the second phase of the Gaza cease-fire agreement. The agreement, which involves the exchange of prisoners, provision of aid, and the de-escalation of fronts in Gaza, also requires the establishment of a new administration in Gaza and the deployment of an international security force. Yet, Israel has not fully implemented this agreement.
US President Trump stated that it is essential to disarm Hamas quickly for the next phase of the Gaza peace plan. According to a report by the international media, there are four main reasons why Netanyahu has not fully enforced the cease-fire agreement. Netanyahu’s government is the hardest right-wing government in Israel’s history. His cabinet members are opposed to the cease-fire agreement and support Israel’s control over Gaza.
Maintaining their support is crucial for Netanyahu’s political position. The deployment of an international security force would limit Israel’s military autonomy. Netanyahu does not want an external power to exert influence in Gaza or have Israel’s military decisions affected by international pressure. The cease-fire agreement includes a provision for a future political solution, which is seen as a step towards a two-state solution. Netanyahu has been opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state for a long time, and Israel’s new settlements have further weakened this possibility.
