At least 16 people were killed and dozens more injured following an Israeli airstrike on military installations in central Syria, as reported by state media on Monday. The late-night attack targeted areas near Masyaf in Hama province, causing significant damage and igniting fires.
The strike, which occurred around 11:20 pm on Sunday, was launched from Lebanese airspace and focused on several military sites in the central region. Syrian air defence systems intercepted and destroyed some missiles, but several still reached their targets, causing widespread damage.
SANA reports that at least 43 individuals were injured, many in critical condition. The death toll, initially reported as 14, has now risen to 16, with some casualties being civilians, according to a health official from Masyaf’s public hospital.
The attack reportedly hit a military research centre believed to be involved in chemical weapons production, where Iranian military experts were said to be present.
The Israeli military has not commented on the strike, adhering to its usual policy of not discussing operations in Syria. This airstrike is part of Israel’s ongoing campaign against Iranian-linked military installations in Syria.
The escalation comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Iran pledging retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and condemning Israeli actions in Syria. Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks on Israel and Hezbollah’s increased activity against Israel further reflect the rising tensions in the region.
