The Islamabad High Court on Thursday conveyed its strong displeasure regarding the federal government’s inability to submit a report concerning Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release, health, and repatriation.
During the proceedings, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan inquired why the rationale behind Pakistan’s refusal to provide assistance in Dr. Siddiqui’s U.S. court case was not presented. He issued a warning, stating that if the report is not produced in his court, he might summon the entire federal cabinet.
“This court has the authority to initiate contempt proceedings not only against the cabinet but also the Prime Minister,” the judge remarked. He granted the government three days to submit the report.
The Additional Attorney General requested five working days to file the report, a request the court granted, allowing time until next week.
A petition concerning a meeting between Dr. Aafia’s sister, Fauzia Siddiqui, and the Prime Minister was also brought up. In response, Justice Ejaz questioned the utility of such a meeting, asking, “What would Fauzia Siddiqui achieve by meeting the Prime Minister?”
The court subsequently adjourned the hearing until July 21.
