The Islamabad Excise and Taxation Department has announced the implementation of a new US-style vehicle registration system, effective immediately. Under this revised model, registration numbers will now be issued to the vehicle owner rather than the vehicle itself.
According to the official notification, each owner will receive a unique, proprietary number plate that will be permanently linked to their name. This new policy will apply to both new vehicles and those already registered. When a vehicle is sold, its previous registration number will be canceled, and a new number will be issued to the new owner.
The notification further specifies that an owner may retain their registration number for up to one year even if they do not own a vehicle during that period. However, if the number is not assigned to a vehicle within a year, it will be automatically canceled.
This initiative, as outlined in a notification from the Director General of Excise and Taxation Islamabad, aims to significantly enhance transparency and convenience in the vehicle registration process.
