Several districts across Sindh are currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting temperatures to climb 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm today, Monday.
According to the Met Office, unusually high temperatures are anticipated in Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Qambar Shahdadkot district, Ghotki district, Sukkur district, and other areas as the heatwave intensifies throughout the province.
In Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar, intermittent strong winds are predicted to continue today, exacerbating the hot and arid conditions that have prevailed in the region in recent days.
The PMD indicated that Karachi is likely to have hot and humid weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, with maximum temperatures potentially ranging between 36°C and 38°C. However, the resumption of sea breezes is expected to provide some respite to residents.
This weather alert follows a week of consistently rising temperatures in the port city. On Sunday, the mercury reached nearly 40°C, and similar conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.
Chief Meteorologist Muhammad Afzal had previously cautioned about a nationwide increase in temperatures due to climate change and the urban heat island effect, particularly in densely populated cities like Karachi.
He warned that temperatures could remain 2°C to 3°C above normal across much of the country and up to 4°C higher in Karachi.
Given the growing challenges posed by the heat, the PMD has urged citizens to take necessary precautions. These include staying well-hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours, and conserving water to alleviate pressure on public infrastructure.
