Instagram has begun testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature that allows users to watch reels in a small, floating window while using other apps. According to TechCrunch, a limited group of users will see a pop-up message with instructions on how to enable the feature. PiP is designed to support multitasking, such as replying to messages or browsing other platforms while a reel continues to play.
The feature was first discovered by app researcher Radu Oncescu. Instagram confirmed the test to TechCrunch on Tuesday. The PiP feature may help increase viewer retention for longer videos by allowing continuous playback in the background. This feature is already available on apps like TikTok and YouTube.
Instagram’s decision to test PiP follows earlier remarks from its head, Adam Mosseri, who had responded to a user inquiry about the feature. At the time, Mosseri said he would discuss the possibility with his team. It remains unclear whether Instagram intends to roll out the feature more broadly.
