NEW DELHI: A serious and politically sensitive allegation of corruption and abuse of authority has surfaced in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, targeting a senior female police official who is accused of defrauding a businessman through a “love scheme” and subsequent blackmail.
Businessman Deepak Tandon, based in Raipur, filed a complaint against DSP Kalpana Verma, alleging that she lured him into a romantic relationship and subsequently used her position to extort massive financial benefits. The alleged haul includes 20 million Indian Rupees (approximately $2 million) in cash, diamond jewelry, gold ornaments, a car, and the forced transfer of ownership of a hotel on a VIP road in Raipur, which was allegedly moved into her brother’s name.
Tandon claims that the officer, who he met in 2021, began demanding continuous gifts and money, backed by threats of framing him in false cases when he refused to comply. Electronic evidence, including alleged screenshots of their communication and details about a car registered to Tandon’s wife that was seized by the DSP, has gone viral.
DSP Kalpana Verma vehemently denies all allegations, dismissing them as a baseless conspiracy stemming from a business dispute and claiming that the electronic evidence presented is fabricated.
Due to the sensitive nature of the case involving a senior uniformed official, police authorities have ordered an immediate initial inquiry. A special investigation team has been formed to authenticate the electronic evidence before a formal First Information Report (FIR) is lodged.
