Rawalpindi: The Adiala Jail authorities have arranged a telephonic conversation between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his sons following court orders, his lawyer Faisal Chaudhry confirmed on Saturday.
Speaking to journalists outside Adiala Jail, Faisal Chaudhry stated that the arrangement was made after PTI leaders alleged that their party founder, incarcerated since August 2023, was being kept in isolation and denied visitors.
The former ruling party also accused the jail authorities of withholding amenities that Imran Khan was entitled to as a former prime minister.
Court Orders and Restoration of Facilities
On January 28, Senior Special Judge Central-I, Shahrukh Arjumand, approved Imran Khan’s request on humanitarian grounds, allowing the provision of necessary facilities.
Additionally, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed jail authorities to arrange a WhatsApp call for Imran Khan and conduct a medical check-up by his physician.
Court Hearing and Jail Authorities’ Response
On January 23, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard a petition regarding the withdrawal of facilities and instructed the authorities to allow Imran Khan to meet his wife, Bushra Bibi, and political leaders as per jail rules.
During the hearing, Khan’s counsel argued that the facilities had been revoked despite court orders. However, a TV and additional newspapers were restored after the court intervened.
The IHC Chief Justice inquired about the process for WhatsApp calls, to which jail authorities responded that the arrangement had been made under trial court directives on humanitarian grounds.
Before adjourning the hearing, the Chief Justice directed the jail administration to obtain directives from the Adiala Jail superintendent and report back to the court.
