PTI Founder Sentenced to 14 Years, Bushra to 7 Years; Ex-First Lady Taken Into Custody
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been convicted in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust corruption case by an accountability court.
Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years and Bushra Bibi to 7 years in prison, imposing fines of Rs1 million and Rs0.5 million, respectively. Failure to pay the fines will result in additional imprisonment of six months for Imran and three months for Bushra.
The court ordered the forfeiture of Al-Qadir Trust University to the federal government. Imran was convicted of corruption and misuse of authority, while Bushra was convicted for aiding and abetting corruption.
Background of the Al-Qadir Trust Case
The £190 million case began in 2019 when the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) seized assets from a Pakistani property tycoon. During Imran’s tenure, an agreement was reached to return the funds to Pakistan, but details remained confidential. Shortly after, Al-Qadir Trust was established, and land was transferred to the trust.
The court concluded that the prosecution’s case was supported by credible evidence, and the defense failed to disprove the allegations. The ruling emphasized that both Imran and Bushra were found guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
