Islamabad: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation, currently in Pakistan to review the judicial system under the 7 billion-dollar Extended Fund Facility (EFF), met with Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and praised the judicial reform process.
Judicial Reforms and Transparency
According to the Ministry of Finance, the IMF’s technical mission is conducting a Governance and Corruption Diagnostic Assessment (GCDA) in the country, examining six key government sectors. The purpose of this assessment is to:
- Recommend measures to combat corruption.
- Promote transparency in institutions.
- Facilitate effective judicial and economic reforms.
Briefing by Chief Justice
According to a statement issued by the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi briefed the delegation about the steps taken to enhance the judiciary’s independence, transparency, and performance.
The Chief Justice stated that the judiciary is an independent institution, and safeguarding its independence is his primary responsibility. He informed the delegation that the Supreme Court is working on improving the Judicial Commission, judicial appointments, and the accountability process.
He also discussed the consideration of linking the parliamentary committee and the judiciary to establish a transparent and efficient judicial system. He mentioned that the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) will hold an important meeting in the last week of February.
IMF Delegation’s Response to Judicial Reforms
The IMF delegation positively acknowledged the judicial stability and reform process in the country. They also discussed the protection of investment in the country, to which the Chief Justice responded by mentioning the establishment of special benches to expedite case hearings.
He further highlighted that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the judicial system would significantly improve the performance of the courts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Letter and Chief Justice’s Response
The Chief Justice shared that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had sent him a letter outlining IMF’s concerns. Instead of responding in writing, the Chief Justice invited the Prime Minister to meet in person at the Supreme Court.
On this occasion, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi also presented a commemorative gift to the IMF delegation, calling the visit an important step toward strengthening Pakistan’s judicial system.
