Do you find yourself battling an overwhelming urge to sleep all day, even after a full night of rest? If you sleep excessively but still wake up feeling unrefreshed and confused, you might be experiencing a rare sleep disorder known as Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH).
This mysterious condition is defined by a persistent need for sleep, yet the sleep itself does not provide the expected refreshment or energy.
According to ‘Hypersomnolence UK,’ a British charity, the disorder is officially rare, affecting fewer than one in 25,000 people in the UK. The primary concern, however, is that many thousands of people may be living with the condition without ever receiving a proper diagnosis, leaving them unaware of their medical state.
Some past studies have even suggested that IH might be more common than previously believed, potentially rivaling the prevalence of conditions like epilepsy or bipolar disorder.
Currently, the exact causes of this disorder remain unknown to medical experts. The prevailing belief is that it is likely a neurological issue. As of now, no known cure for Idiopathic Hypersomnia has been found.
