A technical team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has arrived in Iran for discussions with nuclear experts, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry announced on Monday. This visit is a follow-up to the UN nuclear watchdog chief’s trip to Tehran earlier this month.
“The delegation has arrived in Iran and will hold technical talks with Iranian experts today, which will include discussions on safeguards,” Esmaeil Baghaei stated during a weekly press briefing.
Last week, a UN nuclear watchdog team was also in Iran for technical discussions, where negotiations at the technical level took place.
Following the conclusion of these talks, Iran’s foreign minister suggested that IAEA experts might participate in the upcoming round of Iran-US nuclear talks scheduled for Saturday.
During his visit to Tehran on April 17th, IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi indicated that his agency could contribute to achieving a positive outcome in the negotiations.
In 2018, the US, under the Trump administration, withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major world powers. Subsequently, Iran exceeded the uranium enrichment limits set by the deal and restricted the IAEA’s oversight activities.
In February, the IAEA issued a report expressing “serious concern” about the current situation, noting that Tehran is enriching uranium up to 60% purity, a level close to weapons grade. Tehran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons.
