Hurricane Melissa has carved a path of destruction through the Northern Caribbean, leaving a devastating human toll, with the number of deaths now approaching 50. Authorities fear this number will rise as rescue operations are still underway.
According to international media, Haiti has been hit the hardest by this natural disaster. At least 30 deaths and 20 missing persons have been reported from the nation. Neighboring Jamaica is also mourning, with 19 fatalities reported, while the Dominican Republic has confirmed one death.
Melissa is being described as one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record. It made landfall on the western side of Jamaica as a terrifying Category 5 hurricane, causing massive destruction.
The storm later weakened to a Category 3 hurricane as it struck Cuba. It passed by the Bahamas on Wednesday night. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the storm is now tracking towards the Bermuda area.
