HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — President Joe Biden visited Houston City Hall on Monday night to pay his respects to the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. He arrived with Jackson Lee’s husband and two children, witnessing Jackson Lee become only the second person in history to lie in state at Houston City Hall.
In the guestbook, President Biden wrote: “Fearless, proud, and bold. May God bless a dear friend and great American. May God bless you, Sheila Jackson Lee.”
Monday night’s visit marked the start of four days of tributes honoring the congresswoman.
As national and international dignitaries arrive in Houston, security is a top priority. Secret Service, federal, state, and local law enforcement were present in large numbers on Monday night, with heightened security expected to continue throughout the week.
“It’s a significant event with multiple layers and subjects needing protection,” said James Conway, a counterterrorism expert and former FBI member. “Security services and protection teams will be at their highest vigilance, especially considering global threats.”
The schedule for the tribute events is as follows:
– Tuesday, July 30, 2024: “Viewing & Remembrance” from 4-8 p.m. at God’s Grace Community Church, 9944 W. Montgomery Road, Houston, TX 77088
– Wednesday, July 31, 2024: “Viewing” from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and “Community Farewell & Appreciation Service” from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, 3826 Wheeler Avenue, Houston, TX 77004

Vice President Kamala Harris is among the high-profile dignitaries expected to attend Thursday’s event.
Conway noted that Thursday would be a particularly sensitive day for security due to the significant movement across the city, adding to the complexity of the situation. The Houston Police Department, the Department of Public Safety, the Secret Service, and other agencies are involved in ensuring the safety of the services and the city as they honor the late congresswoman. However, specific details about security plans remain undisclosed.
