HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A warning is being issued to joggers who run alone after a woman was assaulted while running at Memorial Park.
The Houston Police Department confirmed that the attack occurred around 5 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, in the 6500 block of Memorial Drive. The woman was physically assaulted and taken to the hospital.
Police reported that a man in his 20s approached the runner and began attacking her, dragging her off the trail.
A witness, who preferred to remain anonymous, described hearing screams about 2.2 miles into her run and instinctively sprinting towards the source of the cries. “I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know what it was at the time,” the witness said. Her presence startled the attacker, causing him to flee. The attacker reportedly said, “She killed my brother. He ran over my brother,” before running away.
The victim did not recognize the attacker and was unfamiliar with his claims. As of the latest update, no arrests have been made.
The witness’s actions were seen as heroic, though she downplayed it, describing her response as an act of empathy.
