In a significant move expected by Texans fans, edge defender Danielle Hunter, one of the last notable names remaining in the NFL’s free-agent market, has reportedly agreed to a lucrative deal with the Houston Texans. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hunter has signed a two-year contract worth $49 million, with the potential to reach a maximum value of $51 million. The deal includes an impressive $48 million in guaranteed money.
Hunter, whom ESPN ranked as the eighth-best free agent of the offseason overall, will have the opportunity to play in his hometown of Houston, having graduated from Morton Ranch High School in Katy.
While the official announcement of signings is set for Wednesday, the Houston Texans’ official account hinted at Hunter’s arrival with a cryptic post featuring the eyes emoji.
As for what the Texans can expect from Hunter, the 29-year-old linebacker began his career as a third-round pick for the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. Initially serving as a rotational defensive end, he quickly emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Hunter’s breakout season came in 2018, where he garnered his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections after notching 14.5 sacks and 72 combined tackles. He followed this up with another Pro Bowl nod in 2019, maintaining his impressive sack numbers.
In 2022, Hunter transitioned to outside linebacker, resulting in career-best statistics the following season. In 2023, he recorded 16.5 sacks and 83 combined tackles, including 23 for loss, marking career highs across the board.
Despite the spelling of his first name resembling the common feminine name, Hunter pronounces it as “DUH-neel.”
