Pakistan has achieved a significant digital milestone with the inauguration of its first Chromebook Assembly Line. Supported by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), this landmark project is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Government of Pakistan, Google, Tech Valley, and the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
Objective and Production Target:
The establishment of this assembly line aims to accelerate the digital revolution in Pakistan. Under the planned strategy, the facility will locally manufacture 500,000 laptops annually for students and teachers, starting in 2026.
Government and International Vision:
Speaking at the inauguration, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar stated that the new policy, under a robust regulatory framework, is designed to position Pakistan as a Regional Hub for tech development. He added:
- Technical Skill Training: The strategic partnership between Google and Pakistan is expected to support the training of 100,000 developers in technical skills.
- AI Leaders Fellowship: The government will assist 100 institutions in utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) through this fellowship program.
Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja hailed the project as a major achievement. She noted that establishing a full assembly line within one year and securing investment from a renowned global tech company like Google is crucial for the nation’s digital economy. She projected that exports from mobile apps, digital services, and e-commerce could reach $6.6 billion annually by 2030.
