Houston ISD has unveiled a new compensation plan for the upcoming academic year, aiming to increase pay for various staff members. In a press conference held on Tuesday, HISD officials revealed plans for “generous salary enhancements” across the district.
According to Jessica Neyman, HISD’s Chief Human Resources Officer, the district currently employs approximately 27,000 individuals, with teachers averaging a salary of $64,000.
The proposed changes outlined in the HISD 2024-2025 compensation plan include salary increases for teachers based on experience and specialization, with non-NES (New Education System) school teachers set to receive a $2,500 raise at each step.
Additionally, NES high school teachers with five or more years of experience could earn up to $88,816, while non-NES special education teachers will see a minimum salary of $80,000.
Special education teachers with five or more years of experience under NES may earn up to $92,000. Furthermore, all hourly staff members are guaranteed a minimum wage of $15 per hour starting the next school year.
Neyman emphasized the importance of valuing HISD’s teaching staff and ensuring they receive competitive salaries nationwide.
Pending approval by the board as part of the district’s new budget, the new compensation plan is slated to go into effect on July 1.
