Karachi: The megacity of Karachi is currently grappling with an alarming environmental threat, as it has been ranked as the third most polluted city in the world. The city’s residents are currently forced to breathe air categorized as ‘very unhealthy.’
According to the most recent data, Karachi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded a startling reading of 251. This level signifies the severe magnitude of the air pollution, which is poised to have direct adverse impacts on public health across the metropolis.
Environmental experts, elaborating on the AQI classification, stated that an index reading between 151 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy.’ However, readings in the 201 to 300 range, where Karachi currently stands, are designated as ‘very unhealthy.’ The most alarming level is above 301, which is classified as ‘hazardous’ pollution.
Karachi’s high ranking reflects the cumulative effect of industrial emissions, vehicular smog, and unplanned urban sprawl. This escalating pollution is exposing millions of inhabitants to respiratory illnesses, eye irritation, and other severe health complications. There is an immediate and critical need for both authorities and citizens to adopt effective strategies to tackle this growing environmental crisis.
