MUMBAI – Govardhan Asrani, a beloved and iconic actor from the golden age of Indian cinema, passed away today in Mumbai at the age of 84. His death became even more poignant for fans when it was revealed that just hours before his passing, he shared one last message celebrating the festival of Diwali with his followers.
Asrani, who had been suffering from a prolonged illness, took his last breath this morning at Nidhi Hospital in the Juhu area. Only a few hours earlier, a story was shared from his official Instagram account, extending warm wishes to his fans for the Hindu festival.
His manager, Babu Bhai Theba, confirmed the sad news to the Indian media. He stated that the actor’s final rites (funeral) were performed at the Santacruz crematorium in Mumbai, attended only by close family members and friends.
With an illustrious career spanning over five decades (50 years), Asrani graced the screen in more than 350 films. While he was most celebrated for his impeccable comic timing, he also left a deep impact with his serious and emotional roles.
His timeless character as the “Jailer from the British era” in the blockbuster film Sholay remains one of the most memorable performances in Indian film history. His roles in other classics like Bawarchi (The Cook) also earned him widespread acclaim.
Asrani is survived by his wife, actress Manju Asrani, a sister, and a nephew. The couple did not have any children. The departure of Asrani leaves a void in the film industry that will be difficult to fill, but his work and his laughter will live on in the hearts of millions.
