Exports from the Gwadar Free Zone (GFZ) are set to begin, playing a crucial role in ensuring the port’s sustainable operation and facilitating entry into the international market, according to The News.
A senior official from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs told The News, “The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has been instrumental in promoting exports from the Gwadar Free Zone.”
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) discussed a summary submitted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs regarding the export of Potassium Sulphate Fertilizer from Gwadar Port.
It approved an exemption for M/s Agven Private Limited, operating in the Gwadar North Free Zone, to export potassium sulphate fertilizer up to 10,000 tonnes annually or 50% of actual production, whichever is lower, until December 2025.
The ECC’s approval to allow potassium sulphate fertilizer exports is a significant step. It will not only kickstart exports from the GFZ but also encourage further business investment in the zone.
The official stated that SIFC’s support in coordinating the exemption from the Export Policy Order for the GFZ is a new direction. Export-oriented businesses will be encouraged to explore the facilities available in the GFZ and Gwadar Port.
“This decision supports the development of the Gwadar Free Zone while ensuring regulatory oversight through biannual shipment limits and data monitoring mechanisms,” the official said.
According to Samad Khan, CEO of Agven PVT Limited, exports from this plant alone are projected to reach approximately $7 million in 2025. With increased export approvals, expansion of the Agven plant, and additional investment in potassium sulphate production, exports could expand to around $80 million within 2-3 years.
The official from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs mentioned that other export-oriented industries that may consider the Gwadar Free Zone in the future include leather and mineral processing.
In response to a question, he noted that Agven is the first manufacturing plant in the Gwadar Free Zone. Previously, two Chinese companies exported animal hides and sorted metal scrap to China from the GFZ.
Agven’s first export is scheduled to begin in April. “Currently, we are awaiting the SRO/notification of export permission, which we expect to be issued next month in April,” he said.
“We have interest in exporting Potassium Sulphate to Brazil and the UAE. We expect the first two orders to go to these destinations. We also anticipate exporting to Kenya,” he informed.
Agven is currently the only industrial manufacturing plant in the GFZ. Another unit is being established by a Chinese company for the export of processed animal hides, but it is not yet complete.
