A gunman who crossed from Jordan killed three Israelis at the Allenby Bridge border in the occupied West Bank before being shot dead by security forces on Sunday, according to Israeli officials. This attack, linked to the ongoing war in Gaza, marks the first of its kind along the Jordan border since the conflict began in October.
The incident occurred in a commercial cargo area where Jordanian trucks unload their cargo. The attacker, who arrived in a truck, exited the vehicle and opened fire on Israeli forces stationed at the bridge, also known as the King Hussein Bridge. Following the attack, Israel shut down all three land border crossings with Jordan.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested that the attack was connected to the broader conflict with Iran and Hamas. A Jordanian border official reported that at least two dozen Jordanian truck drivers were detained by Israeli authorities. Jordan is currently investigating the incident.
In Gaza, an Israeli airstrike early Sunday resulted in the deaths of five people, including two women, two children, and a senior official in the Civil Defence. The strike targeted the home of Mohammed Morsi, the deputy director of the Civil Defence, in the Jabaliya camp. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began, with around 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents displaced.
