India’s Gujarat state has been battered by relentless torrential rainfall over the past week, causing widespread devastation and prompting a red alert for major cities including Ahmedabad and Surat.
Approximately 300 mm of rain has been recorded, leading to several fatalities. Reports indicate around 100 deaths due to weather-related incidents. In the past 24 hours alone, Gujarat has seen significant flooding in low-lying areas, with three people reported dead and seven missing from one incident, prompting the evacuation of thousands.
Flood-like conditions have been reported across various parts of the state, and fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea.
The severe weather is expected to persist until September 1, as a deep depression over East Rajasthan continues to strengthen. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Monday that the depression, which formed over northwest Madhya Pradesh on August 25, has intensified and is moving west-southwestward. It is projected to reach Kutch, adjacent areas of Pakistan, and the northeast Arabian Sea by the morning of August 29.
