Guillermo del Toro, widely regarded as a master of modern monster cinema, is finally bringing his vision of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the screen. The trailer for the highly anticipated Netflix drama has debuted, revealing a unique and aesthetically rich take on the gothic classic.
The Netflix production stars Oscar Isaac as the ambitious Doctor Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the creature he brings to life. The high-calibre supporting cast includes Mia Goth, Ralph Ineson, Charles Dance, and Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz.
The film, which premiered earlier at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival, has garnered positive reviews from critics, achieving an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score. It is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on October 17.
Del Toro, known for infusing his creatures with a blend of beauty and tragedy, stated that his rendition of the monster is far from the terrifying caricature often associated with the character. Instead, he describes it as “staggeringly beautiful, in an otherworldly way.”
In an interview with EW, the celebrated filmmaker praised Isaac’s portrayal of the doctor, emphasizing the creative drive behind the transgression. “Victor is as much an artist as he is a surgeon,” Del Toro said. “And if he’s been dreaming about this creature for all his life, he’s going to nail it. It looks like a newborn, alabaster creature. The scars are beautiful and almost aerodynamic,” he detailed.
Del Toro also lauded Elordi’s performance as the creature, saying the actor “brought a truth to this performance that’s really something to behold.”
Following its run in select theaters, Frankenstein will officially land on Netflix on November 7, promising a visually stunning adaptation that challenges the traditional narrative of fear.
