In Houston, Texas, Charles Brooks considers himself fortunate to have escaped unharmed after his car was struck by gunfire while he was stopped at a traffic light in the Greater Uptown area on Saturday. Brooks shared his harrowing experience exclusively with KTRK.
Recalling the incident, Brooks stated that he had just left a grocery store around 1:20 p.m. and was en route to prepare a Mother’s Day lunch when the shooting occurred. While stopped at the intersection of Voss and San Felipe, he heard three gunshots, followed by his car window shattering.
Reacting swiftly, Brooks took cover in his vehicle, unsure of what was unfolding. Upon exiting his car, he was informed by a nearby woman that a man had fired shots from a bank parking lot.
According to Houston police, the shooter reported that he was seated in the bank parking lot when an individual opened the passenger door of his car and stole money orders he had just obtained. In response, he fired shots at the robbers as they fled, inadvertently striking Brooks’ car.
Despite the alarming ordeal, both the shooter and Brooks remained at the scene. Brooks, after learning of the circumstances surrounding the incident, opted not to press charges.
Although Brooks discovered a bullet fragment in his shirt pocket the following day, he expressed gratitude for escaping unscathed, citing the presence of God in his life.
Regarding legal action, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office declined to pursue an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge but instead recommended a charge of deadly conduct. The investigation remains ongoing.
