New York: Pakistan has taken a firm stance at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), issuing a stark warning that the access of terrorist groups based in Afghanistan to illegal arms and advanced weaponry poses a serious threat to regional peace and stability. Pakistan has urged the international community to take immediate and effective measures to address this alarming situation.
Overt Terror Operations Continue
Speaking during the UNSC session, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that terrorist organizations are openly conducting operations from Afghan soil. He expressed profound concern over the existence of large stockpiles of modern weaponry and ammunition in Afghanistan, which are dangerously enhancing the capabilities of these groups.
Ambassador Ahmad further highlighted a critical external dimension, stating that these terrorist groups are also receiving financial and operational support from a ‘major disruptive actor’ in the region, which has compounded the security challenges.
Call for Urgent International Action
The Pakistani envoy called for immediate action from the international community, focusing on two pivotal areas:
- Curbing Illegal Arms Access: The global community must take concrete steps to prevent terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan from acquiring access to illegal and modern weapons. This action is essential for the security not only of Pakistan but of the entire region.
- Enforcing Afghan Commitments: The international community must hold the Afghan interim authorities accountable for fully implementing their international responsibilities and commitments. These pledges include the assurance that Afghanistan’s territory will not be used to launch attacks against any other country.
Pakistan’s statement comes amidst a renewed wave of internal terrorism, serving as a critical call to the global community to collectively address this pressing issue for the sake of regional stability.
