Global Mourning on the Passing of Prince Karim Aga Khan: An Irreplaceable Loss for Humanity

Lisbon, Portugal – February 4, 2025: Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims, has passed away at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal. The news of his demise has caused deep sorrow among his followers worldwide.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) confirmed his passing in a statement, stating that he passed away peacefully among his family members. The organization extended condolences to his family and the global Ismaili community, announcing that his successor will soon be named, in accordance with the historical traditions of the Shia Ismaili Imamat.
End of a Remarkable Era of Humanitarian Service
Prince Karim Aga Khan IV assumed the Imamat in 1957 at the young age of 20, succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan. Over the past six decades, he dedicated his life to humanitarian, educational, health, cultural, economic development, and interfaith harmony efforts across the world. Through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), he initiated thousands of development projects in dozens of countries, including Aga Khan University, the University of Central Asia, the Aga Khan Foundation, the Aga Khan Health Services, and many other welfare institutions. His mission was always centered on serving humanity and supporting underprivileged communities.
Global Leaders Express Condolences
His passing has been met with mourning across the world. Leaders of the South Asia Democracy Watch, including President Ameer Makhani, Syed Fayaz Hassan, Raja Zahid Akhtar Khanzada, and Aftab Siddiqui, have described his demise as an irreplaceable loss for humanity.
Ameer Makhani stated, “Prince Karim Aga Khan was not only a spiritual leader but also a symbol of peace, tolerance, and philanthropy.”
Syed Fayaz Hassan remarked, “His passing has left the world, especially developing nations, deprived of a great benefactor.”
Raja Zahid Akhtar Khanzada added, “He always worked for the betterment of humanity, and his contributions will be remembered forever.”
Aftab Siddiqui noted, “The world has lost a leader who was always committed to the welfare of humanity.”
Important Announcement Expected for the Ismaili Community
In accordance with Aga Khan 50th will, his successor will be announced soon, following the Ismaili traditions. This decision will be formally declared in the presence of his family and international Ismaili leadership.
While his followers across the world are mourning today, his teachings and mission of serving humanity will live on forever.
