DOHA / BERLIN – Hamas’s acceptance of key elements within U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan has ignited a wave of international support, with leaders and global institutions seizing on the move as a rare and critical opportunity to halt the devastating conflict.
Qatar, a central mediator, immediately welcomed the Hamas statement, noting its “readiness to release all hostages.” Doha’s Foreign Ministry also publicly endorsed President Trump’s call for Israel to immediately halt its bombing of Gaza.
Egypt praised Hamas’s response, describing the Trump proposal as a “realistic political vision” capable of delivering “peace and stability” to the Middle East. Cairo urged all involved parties to demonstrate the “level of responsibility required” to ensure the war concludes.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Hamas’s move “constructive and a significant step toward achieving lasting peace,” and forcefully demanded that Israel “immediately stop all its attacks” on the enclave.
European Leaders Seize the Moment
Optimism was strong across Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron pressed for swift follow-up on Hamas’s commitment, arguing that the agreement offered a chance to “make decisive progress towards peace.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that “peace in Gaza and the release of the hostages are within reach,” signaling Berlin’s firm backing for the U.S. mediation effort.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed that he was “encouraged” by Hamas’s statement, urging both sides to “seize the opportunity” to bring the conflict to an end.
The support spanned multiple continents. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed her “full support for President Trump’s efforts,” emphasizing that a ceasefire must enable the immediate release of all hostages. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled Hamas’s acceptance a “significant step forward,” believing Trump’s initiative had brought the region “closer to peace than ever before.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney added his nation’s voice, expressing gratitude to Donald Trump for his “essential leadership” in advancing the agreement. Carney stated on X that Canada “welcomes commitments from Hamas to relinquish power and release all remaining hostages, living and deceased,” and affirmed that Canada “stands ready to support the sustained, unimpeded, and large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into and throughout Gaza.”
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the progress but conditioned his support by pressing Hamas to “lay down its arms and release all remaining hostages without delay.”
In a notable divergence, Colombian President Gustavo Petro took a far more aggressive stance, demanding the “cessation of the genocide.” Petro went further, stating that if Trump were to move militarily to “stop the oppression over Palestine,” Colombia’s army would stand alongside the effort.
