Berlin —
Germany is set to expand its air defense capabilities by purchasing 15 additional U.S.-made F-35 stealth fighter jets, according to a report by the German weekly Der Spiegel.
The new acquisition plan is part of Berlin’s broader effort to modernize its air force and strengthen NATO’s collective defense amid ongoing regional tensions in Europe.
Confidential documents prepared for the German Parliament’s budget committee estimate the cost of the new aircraft at $2.92 billion. The proposal is expected to receive formal approval in the coming weeks, sources close to the defense ministry said.
Once completed, the purchase will bring Germany’s total F-35 fleet to 50 aircraft, enhancing its ability to conduct both offensive and defensive air operations within NATO’s strategic framework.
Defense analysts say the F-35s will provide Germany with cutting-edge combat capabilities, including stealth technology, advanced avionics, and next-generation weapon systems, significantly improving interoperability with allied forces.
The move comes as European nations continue to ramp up defense spending in response to heightened security concerns following the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict.
