Police in Fort Worth are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening at NW 28th Street and McKinley Avenue.
Around 5 p.m., Fort Worth police received an alert regarding a stolen vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The driver attempted to evade capture by ramming into an officer’s car and driving erratically. Police then deployed spike strips to halt the vehicle.
According to FWPD, the driver crashed at the intersection of McKinley and NW 28th Street, exited the vehicle with a long gun, and proceeded to carjack another vehicle. Shots were fired at the suspect during this incident.
Police reported that the driver later exited the second vehicle and aimed the gun towards a nearby business. Officers fired additional rounds, striking the suspect, who fell to the ground. He was subsequently arrested and transported for medical treatment, where he remains in stable condition.
Chief Neil Noakes emphasized the challenges and risks faced by police officers in such situations, highlighting the need to consider the safety of innocent civilians throughout the incident.
“This incident underscores the unpredictable and dangerous nature of a police officer’s job. They never know when they might encounter an armed individual or what actions that individual might take,” said Noakes. “When responding in environments where innocent civilians could be present, officers must ensure they are aware of their surroundings and the potential risks beyond the immediate threat they are addressing.”
The initial report regarding the stolen vehicle came through Fort Worth’s flock camera system, according to Chief Noakes. The identity of the driver has not been disclosed, and there were no injuries reported among officers or civilians involved in the incident.
