A high-stakes search operation has been dramatically relaunched in Australia’s remote Tasmanian wilderness following the recovery of a mobile phone belonging to a Belgian woman who vanished two years ago.
Celine Cremer, who was last seen on June 17, 2023, disappeared near Philosopher Falls. Although her vehicle was located in a nearby area just days later, extensive multi-agency searches conducted at the time failed to yield any trace of the missing woman.
The significant breakthrough occurred recently when Cremer’s family and friends, who have remained dedicated to finding her, recovered her mobile phone from an area that had supposedly been searched previously. Tasmania Police have confirmed the device belongs to Cremer and have immediately sent it for intensive forensic examination.
The recovery of the phone has allowed investigators to solidify a key theory regarding Cremer’s movements just before she vanished. A police inspector indicated that the phone’s data and its specific location corroborate the hypothesis that Cremer left the central walking track.
“We believe that as daylight was fading, Celine may have used an application on her mobile to attempt a shortcut back to her vehicle, bypassing the main route at Philosopher Falls,” a police official stated. Authorities suspect that in the dense, complex terrain, Cremer likely dropped the phone and continued walking without it, leading to disorientation and ultimately causing her to become lost in the heavy bushland.
The official search, supported by this crucial new evidence, is expected to continue for the next five days, employing systematic search patterns focused on the area of the phone’s recovery. Four of Cremer’s friends have flown from Belgium to Australia to assist in the renewed efforts to locate her. Cremer’s family reported her missing nine days after she was last sighted.
