As the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics approaches, let’s take a look back at NBC 5 Senior Meteorologist David Finfrock’s Olympic connection.
On December 12, 2001, Finfrock had the honor of carrying the Olympic torch through Dallas in anticipation of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The torch relay spanned 300 towns, starting in Athens on December 4, 2001, and arriving in Atlanta, where Muhammad Ali ignited the torch on American soil. Out of 300,000 candidates, about 12,000 Americans participated in carrying the torch.
For the 2024 Paris Olympics, the torch relay commenced in France on May 8. Among the torchbearers is Snoop Dogg, who will carry the flame as one of the final torchbearers.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will officially begin on July 26 with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony.
Nearly 20 athletes from North Texas are set to compete for Team USA. NBC 5’s Laura Harris and photojournalist Noah Bullard are already in Paris, providing live coverage from the Games.
