Flash floods and mudslides caused by monsoon rains in Thailand have resulted in 22 deaths and 19 injuries, authorities reported on Monday. The severe weather has affected 30,000 households across the country, with warnings in place for further risks.
Among the victims were a Russian couple and nine migrant workers from Myanmar who died in a mudslide on Phuket island. The disaster has impacted a dozen provinces over the past week.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra visited affected areas in Nan over the weekend, distributing food supplies to residents. Meanwhile, rescuers are working to retrieve three workers trapped after a tunnel collapsed at a Thai-China railway project in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Severe flooding continues in five northern provinces, including Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, and Prae. There is also a high risk of rising waters near the Chao Phraya River, including in Bangkok, although current levels are still under control.
