The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested five individuals accused of producing and circulating an AI-generated fake video of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
According to FIA sources, the arrests were made during operations in Faisalabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, and Multan.
Sources revealed that more arrests are expected as the investigation expands. The suspects are being booked under cybercrime laws.
The case was initiated following a complaint by Shahid Sharif in Faisalabad, leading to the registration of Inquiry No. 169. Subsequently, a case (No. 7/24) was filed against the primary suspect, Shehzad Munawar.
The accused is allegedly involved in sharing highly derogatory AI-generated content targeting foreign nationals.
The investigation also points to an attempt to strain Pakistan’s diplomatic relations with a friendly Islamic nation by circulating fabricated videos involving prominent Pakistani figures.
Sources confirmed that a technical report regarding the AI-generated content has been acquired for further proceedings.
