Karachi: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has responded to the letter written by Karachi Mayor, Murtaza Wahab, regarding the issue of sealing the Cotton Exchange building. In its response, the FIA made it clear that the Cotton Exchange building was leased out as a federal government property under the orders of the Supreme Court. In the letter, a reference was made to the records of the Waqf Properties Board, stating that the building has been under the ownership of the federal government since August 9, 1963. According to the FIA, the building’s association was collecting crores of rupees every year from 213 lessees, while the documents presented in relation to the lease do not match the available government records. Karachi Mayor, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, had written a letter to the federal authorities stating that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) itself had stamped “fake” on the property ownership documents. The FIA rejected the allegation of one-sided action, stating that the Board’s records show that the association and unlawful lessees were already issued notices. It was further said that the FIA investigations are ongoing, and therefore, controversial statements should be avoided to prevent any interference with the investigation. Following the FIA’s response, the ownership and management of the Cotton Exchange building have once again become a contentious issue, with further developments dependent on the ongoing investigation.
