The federal government has declared the operation in the Tirah region as speculative, and accused the provincial government of politicizing the issue. In a press conference in Islamabad, Defense Minister Khwaja Asif said, alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Coordinator Aamer Waqat, that there is no operation underway in the Tirah region. He stated that the annual relocation due to snowfall is not a crisis, and that the issue of the Tirah region should be resolved through consultation with the provincial government and the jirga.
Khwaja Asif stated that there are 50,000 individuals affiliated with the outlawed TTP in the Tirah region, and that jirga members have met with TTP leaders. He emphasized that intelligence-based operations are conducted in areas where information is received, and that the military is not present in the region. The Defense Minister also stated that there is no police station in the Tirah region, and that the region’s 17,000-foot elevation and extreme cold make it difficult for individuals to reside there.
Khwaja Asif stated that the provincial government and jirga have come to an agreement regarding the relocation of individuals from the region, and that the provincial government has allocated 4 billion rupees for the relocation. He accused the provincial government of trying to portray the relocation as a crisis, stating that the situation has been deliberately created to make it appear as though the individuals are being forcibly relocated.
The Defense Minister also stated that a meeting was held between TTP leaders and jirga members on December 11, 25, and 26, and that the jirga members later met with the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The meeting discussed the establishment of health centers, schools, and police stations in the region.
In a separate development, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s special assistant for information, Shahzad Khan, stated that the nation is aware that individuals in the Tirah region are being forced to relocate. Khwaja Asif stated that the Tirah region has not seen any military operations in several years, and that the speculation surrounding the region is unfounded.
The Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karam Khan, stated that the Tirah region’s issue is not a matter of political rhetoric, but rather a pressing concern that requires a prompt solution. The Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, stated that individuals who spread rumors of instability in a country should be discouraged and not given any attention.
