Maulana Fazlur Rahman, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), expressed gratitude for being awarded an honorary PhD degree, but stated that he would prefer to be called Maulana. In a media talk in Karachi, Maulana Fazlur Rahman said that, from a defense perspective, Pakistan’s performance has been satisfactory, and the Governor has expressed his views. He added that, just as a madrasa is an institution, one should respect and appreciate its value, especially when it is ranked high in the field of Islamic sciences.
Maulana Fazlur Rahman stated that the 26th amendment was passed along with some changes, and the draft of this amendment was not prepared by JUI. He added that it is the beauty of our society that, on a political level, we respect each other’s views, and it is our tradition to respect each other, which we are trying to preserve today.
Maulana Fazlur Rahman emphasized the importance of respecting the supremacy of the Constitution and the dignity of the Parliament. He stated that the 26th amendment was passed through consensus, and it should not be made a contentious issue. However, the 27th amendment was passed unilaterally, and the two-thirds majority was obtained through coercion. He added that Afghanistan has never had a friendly government towards Pakistan since Ashraf Ghani, and the issue of Afghan refugees is a bilateral problem between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Maulana Fazlur Rahman stated that a policy should be formulated to repatriate Afghan refugees instead of forcing them to leave. He added that treating guests harshly and forcing them to leave is equivalent to destroying hospitality. He emphasized that the government is exerting more pressure and will continue to do so, and that the issue of Afghan refugees is a bilateral problem between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
